Youre All Qualified. How Being Positive Can Get You the Job

Youre All Qualified. How Being Positive Can Get You the JobYoure All Qualified. How Being Positive Can Get You the JobIf you made it to the second interview, youre likely qualified for the job just like the other candidates that made it that far. Rely on these tactics when youre on level footing. The truth is, if you are one of the top three or four final candidates being considered for a job, you are probably no mora or less qualified for that job than the others being considered. Everyone who gets beyond the initial screening interviews can probably do the job and do it well. Employers are too busy to waste their time interviewing unqualified candidates. When I was the head of human resources at USA Networks and TV Guide, I frequently had to choose among candidates who, on paper, looked pretty much the same. Yet by the time we finished the interview process, there was usually one candidate who all the interviewers agreed was the best candidate for the job. That candidate found a way to make them stand out from the other candidates.Contrary to popular belief, there is usually no one candidate who is clearly more qualified than all of the rest. What gets someone hired is that heis more likeablefits in better with the corporate culturewows the interviewer with some particular successsimply focuses more acutely on what is important to the person making the hiring decisionThe keys to turning an interview into a job are confidence, a positive attitude, preparation and enthusiasm. To win the job over other, similarly qualified candidates, you need to project confidence.Employers are looking to hire George Clooney, not George Costanza. So make sure that you that you are unabashedly positive and exhibit a can-do attitude.I was recently at a job fair. What impressed me about some of the attendees I spoke with was their unfailing optimism. Those are the individuals employers want to hire. A smiling Annette Melendez, formerly the director of public operations at the Liber ty Science Center in Jersey City, N.J., told me she decided to come to the job fair along with a friend at the last minute because she thought she might get lucky today. That kind of positive outlook is what makes a candidate stand out. Shauna Brice, a recruiter for DCG, looking to fill a number of financial-analyst positions for her company, noted the importance of the attitude a job applicant exhibits. While they have to have the right skill tischset to get hired, there are some candidates who are so enthusiastic that they make you wish there was something you could give them.Put everything in its best possible light.Always be positive when talking about yourself, even when asked to describe your weaknesses. (I tend to care too much about getting everything right, although a little disingenuous, is a lot better than I have a bad habit of stealing pens from the office.) Never say anything bad about a prior employer, even if its true. The prospective employer wont know if what you ar e saying is true or false but will wonder if you will talk about them that way after you leave their employ. When your prospective employer looks at you, she needs to see someone she feels certain can help her with whatever is most important to her. You need to give them that sense of security that you can deliver for them. There are a few ways to instill thisAppearanceThis starts with how you look. Update your wardrobe. Get the best-quality clothes that you can afford. Get a new haircut. Polish your shoes. Dress appropriately for the position. Dress like someone in that position at that company would dress for an important business meeting. When you look good, you feel good, and it showsResearchPreparation will make you feel more confident. Learn everything you can about a eignung employer. Identify the challenges they are facing. Know who their competitors are and what makes them different from their competitors. Research the job and the interviewers as well. Show a potential emplo yer not only that you really want to work for him but also that you have something to offer them that he needs. Focus on what is most important to the employer. Learn everything you can about the company and the challenges they face. Find out what things at work keep your prospective boss up at night and show how you can help him get a better night sleep by fixing those problems. At the end of the interview, ask for the job. Let him know you want the job, not that you need the job. Remember People want to hire people who really want to work for them.EasePractice interviewing. Go on every interview you can. Practice role-playing possible interview questions with a friend. Know how you will answer the tough questions you will certainly be asked Tell me about yourself. What are your weaknesses? Why should I hire you?The job market remains tough. Competition for jobs is fierce. Yet millions of people are being hired every day. Someone is selected to fill every open job. There is no reas on you should not be the one selected. If you are going to be the one selected from the myriad qualified candidates vying for a given position, show the employer that you are the candidate that wants the job the most and will work the hardest to make sure that you help them get the job done. And dont forget to smile. It just might put you over the top.

Surviving Marine Corps Basic Training (Boot Camp)

Surviving Marine Corps Basic Training (Boot Camp)Surviving Marine Corps Basic Training (Boot Camp)Continued from Part 1 Marine Corps training continues to progress and gets tougher. Recruits should be physically prepared according to the official USMC Boot Camp Page. Weeks 2 - 7 As you move away from the first week, you will continue learning the basics of close combat skills, including the infamous pugil sticks. Many recruits are somewhat apprehensive about this phase of training, but then find out how much fun it really is. It is almost impossible to get hurt. The recruits are protected by a football helmet and mask, rubber neck roll and crotch cup, and only two kinds of blows are permitted the slash and the horizontal butt stroke, both to the well-protected head and neck. A clean shot ends the bout. The secret is aggression this is not a defensive sport. Learn to compete as a unit and win awards You will learn field first aid, attend classes on core values (as well as other academic classes), and receive several hours on basic weapon handling. Around week 3, in addition to more pugil sticks and close combat training, additional classes on first aid and core values, you will participate in a 3-mile march (with packs). The Confidence Course consists of eleven obstacles, designed so that each obstacle is more physically challenging than the last. The obstacles are (1) Dirty name (2) Run, Jump Swing (3) The Inclining Wall (4) The Confidence Climb (5) Monkey Bridge (6) The Tough One (7) Reverse Climb (8) Slide for Life (9) the Hand Walk (10) The Arm Stretcher, and (11) The Sky Scraper. While these names sound daunting, the course is designed so the average platoon can run it in 45 minutes. The Confidence Course is a great morale builder, as most of the recruits find out they can negotiate the obstacles with ease. During the fourth week, there will be even more training with pugil sticks and additional training in close combat skills. In addition to the dai ly P.T., there will be further academic classes (including more core values training). The highlight of week 4 is the individual drill evaluation. Your platoon will be evaluated, graded, and compared to the other platoons. The winning platoon, of course, receives a trophy for the trophy table. The losing platoons receive the wrath of their respective D.I.s. The biggest event of week 5 is Combat Water Survival. All Marines must pass basic water survival skills in order to graduate from boot camp (those who dont pass will receive extensive remedial training until they do). Training in Combat Water Survival develops a recruits confidence in the water. All recruits must pass the minimum required level of Combat Water Survival-4, which requires recruits to perform a variety of water survival and swimming techniques. If a recruit meets the CWS-4 requirements, he may upgrade to a higher level. All recruits train in the camouflage utility uniform, but those upgrading may be required to tra in in full combat gear, which includes a rifle, helmet, flak jacket, and pack. Also, this week will be a 5-mile hike, a test on Marine Customs Courtesies, more training in first aid, a full-blown inspection (uniforms, rifles, questions, etc.), and (of course) more classes on core values. Weapons Training.Marksmanship training teaches recruits the fundamentals of marksmanship with their Marine M16A4service rifle. This training takes place over two weeks, the first of which is called Snap-In Week. During this week, recruits are introduced to the four shooting positions (standing, kneeling, sitting and prone) and a Primary Marksmanship Instructor shows recruits how to fire, how to adjust their sights, how to take into account the effects of the weather, etc. Recruits also have the opportunity to fire on the Indoor Simulated Marksmanship Training machine. During the second week of marksmanship training, recruits actually fire a known-distance course with ranges of 200, 300 and 500 yar ds. Recruits prepare for rifle qualification on Friday of that week. Field Firing Range (FFR). FFR is a portion of training devoted to firing weapons in a field condition. During marksmanship training, recruits learn how to fire at a single target while in a stationary position. During FFR recruits learn how to fire at moving and multiple targets, while under low-light conditions and wearing their field protective (gas) mask. Weeks 7 - 10 During week 7, you will also experience a 6-mile night march, and get another chance at the Confidence Course. Week 8 is called Team Week, which means you get to spend all of your time working at the mess hall or some other glamorous detail. This is generally considered less taxing than the previous weeks The ninth week will consist almost entirely of the fundamentals of field firing, in preparation for field training during the tenth week. There will also be a 10-mile march (with packs) during week 9. If you havent experienced blisters yet dur ing your time in boot camp, you most likely will experience it during week 9. During week 10, youll start putting all of your training together during field training. Field Training is practice war. Youll operate and live in a simulated combat environment, and learn the fundamentals of patrolling, firing, setting up camp, and more. Basic Warrior Training introduces recruits to field living conditions. The majority of a Marines field training is conducted after recruit training at the School of Infantry. During the 3-day Basic Warrior Training conducted during boot camp, recruits will learn basic field skills like setting up a tent, field sanitation, and camouflage. It is also during this training that recruits go through the gas chamber. During week 11, you get a chance to put everything youve learned in boot camp to the test. The week starts with the biggest competition of all The Company Commanders Inspection. Not only are you being judged here, but your D.I. is being judged as w ell. It will behoove you to give this inspection every single thing youve got (hint to don your trousers without breaking the crease, stand on your foot-locker). The Crucible Once youve gotten the Company Commanders Inspection out of the way, youll experience the event to top all events The Crucible. The Crucible is the final test every recruit must go through to become a Marine. It will test you physically, mentally and morally and is the defining moment in recruit training. The Crucible is no walk in the park unless your idea of a walk in the park takes place over 54-hours and includes food and sleep deprivation (only four hours of sleep per night)and approximately 40 miles of marching. The Crucible event pits teams of recruits against a barrage of day and night events requiring every recruit to work together to solve problems, overcome obstacles and help each other along. The Crucible fest is designed around Core Value Stations, Warrior Stations, the Confidence Course, React ion Course, and Movement Course as well as other various mentally and physically challenging events. A final foot march will conclude with a Morning Colors Ceremony and a Warriors Breakfast. The famed Eagle, Globe and Anchor Ceremony is conducted immediately after the Crucible. The Eagle, Globe, and Anchor are the symbols in the Marine Corps Emblem It signifies that you are a member, always and forever, of the few and the proud. The ceremony is the most emotional time of basic training, even more so than the graduation parade. Week 11 is also known as Transformation Week. During this week the new Marines are given 1-hour extra free time each evening and wear the rank insignia of the grade to which they were either guaranteed upon enlistment or earned during recruit training. Also during this week, more responsibility is given to the privates and privates first class and the supervision of the drill instructors is decreased. In fact, drill instructors dont wear their duty belts duri ng this time and many of the Drill Instructors will allow the new Marines call them by their rank, not as sir or maam. This week helps these new Marines adjust from being a recruit to being a Marine. (One should notenzeichen that after boot camp, one should never call enlisted sir or maam again, as some senior enlisted hate that. One should also never use the third person when speaking after boot camp.) The final week. D.I.s are no longer yelling (as much). You will spend this last week learning about the Heroes of the Corps, a class or two on financial management, the relatively easy Battalion Commanders Inspection, more (of course) core value classes, and finally, graduation practice and graduation. The minimum (core) graduation requirements are Pass the physical fitness test and be within prescribed weight standardsQualify for Combat Water Survival at level 4 or higherQualify with the service riflePass the battalion commanders inspectionPass the written testsComplete the Crucibl e If you fail in any of the above areas, you are subject to be recycled (sent backward in time to another platoon), or may possibly be discharged. After Training If you do a great job, you just might get promoted. Based on the recommendations of the Senior Drill Instructor, the Commanding General can meritoriously promote recruits who have consistently demonstrated superior performance in the following areas and have no nonjudicial punishment infractions. Physical FitnessMarksmanshipLeadershipMotivationAcademicsField Skills All Marines are authorized 10 days of leave, immediately following graduation from boot camp. Your training is not finished. Following your leave, you will go on to further your training at the School of Infantry (East) which is located at Camp Geiger, MCB Camp Lejeune, North Carolina (for those who attended basic at Parris Island), or the School of Infantry (West), at Camp Pendleton, CA, for those who attended basic training at San Diego.Marines who are desi gnated as infantry Marines are assigned to Infantry Training Battalion at the school of infantry for infantry-specialized training. All Marines, entering the Military Occupation Specialties (MOS) of 0311 Rifleman, 0331 Machinegunner, 0341 Mortarman, 0351 Assaultman, or 0352 Anti-Tank Guided Missleman, attend this 51-day course. All other Marines (male and female) are assigned to the School of Infantry to attend the Marine Combat Training (MCT) course. MCT consists of 22 days of battle skills training which enables Marines, regardless of MOS, to operate in a combat environment. Following MCT, Marines attend their MOS schools to learn the trade they are expected to perform for the Marine Corps. The length of MOS training varies, depending on the job. Following MOS training, Marines are assigned to their first permanent duty station.

Reaching Out with 3D Printed Hands

Reaching Out with 3D Printed Hands Reaching Out with 3D Printed Hands Some of the greatest heroes of comics and science fiction get their might from machines that, in fact, compensate for major physical disabilities. The same fusion-powered chest implant that keeps Tony Starks injured heart beating also controls his invincible Iron Man armor. Father-and-son Jedi masters Anakin and Luke Skywalker both gripped their light sabers in lifelike bionic hands. But in real life, a new crop of low-cost 3D printed prosthetics beat these make-believe marvels of mechanical engineering hands down.Children account for a significant share of the two 1000000 Americans today living without one or more of their limbsmost of them have lost hands or lower arms from amputation, injury, or birth defects. While advanced artificial limbs today are amazingly dexterous, they can cost up to $100,000, far beyond the reach of lower-income families and too steep for the tastes of many health insurers. That dispari ty has inspired humanitarian engineering organizations and mission-driven private companies on both sides of the Atlantic to reach out with a more affordable solution made possible by additive manufacturing.Joel Gibbard, CEO of Open Bionics, showing a low-cost bionic hand his company designed. Image Open BionicsThe 3D mechanical hand maker movement gets its momentum from a convergence of do-it-yourself 3D printing expertise, social media activism, and plenty of individual goodwill from ingenious engineers. Case in point Open Bionics,Bristol, UK. The company has teamed up with the Walt Disney Company on a new series of fun and functional bionic hands inspired by characters from Marvel Comics, the Star Wars saga, and Disney movies such as Frozen.Open Bionics has developed sustainable business and manufacturing processes that allow it to produce high-quality, customized bionic hands sold at a price 100 times lower than top-of-the-line limbs. The Disney-inspired range, featuring the Iro n Man Hand, the Light Saber Hand, and a Frozen-themed Snowflake Hand, are tricked out with flashing lights and other effects that add fun to their functionality. The goal, according to company founder Joel Gibbard, is to help kids view their prosthetics as a source of excitement rather than embarrassment or limitation. The company evolved from a successful crowdfunded initiative on Indiegogo to provide low-income kids with free bionics with functionality comparable to high-end models. That experience inspired Gibbard to launch Open Bionics, a business venture with humanitarian aims. With a price tag in the $1,000 range, the companys devices are affordable for families of kids who might otherwise have to settle for the venerable hook or, worse yet, no prosthetic of any kind. Its a far cheaper alternative than other commercial devices, yet the revenues are sufficient to support Open Bionics investments in quality control, regulatory compliance, and product development. As Gibbard puts it, even though it is now possible for people to 3D print and assemble good prosthetics themselves, many amputees would still prefer the greater convenience and customer support provided by a manufactured item.e-Nable offers open source files for 3D printing hands and arms. Image e-NableThe Open Bionics model is an extension of grassroots humanitarian initiatives such as e-Nable, which brings volunteer engineers, 3D printing enthusiasts, occupational therapies, students, inventors, and professors together to provide prosthetics to children without hands. The group is the brainchild of Jon Schull, a professor at Rochester Institute of Technology. Schull used social media channels to mobilize like-minded volunteers around the goal of supplying free prosthetics for low-income children. More than 6,000 e-Nable volunteers have printed more than 1,500 devices for children in 50 countries, the group states. Future initiatives include developing more realistic-looking hands and exploring ne w technologies such as text-to-speech and gene printing. The e-Nable Handomatic web application helps DIY printers to create custom-sized STL files for printing the groups free hand designs. The app automatically emails printable files to users based on their measurements and the type of device they want to build. And, an international volunteer network, e-Nable connects families in need with nearby teams of engineers and related specialists who can help them define, build, and learn to use customized prosthetics, which are provided at little or no cost.We have a responsibility to do this, says Albert Manero, an e-Nable volunteer and Fulbright scholar now pursuing a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering at the University of Central Florida. With these degrees in engineering, if we cant be helping others with them, then what are they worth? Manero recently led a team of UCF graduate students in a seven-week project to design and build a $350, 3D printed bionic appendage for a six-year-old b oy born with only half his right arm. Maneros 32-member group is sharing the blueprints and assembly instructions as free open-source content online. But that was only the beginning for Manero and his all-student volunteer organization Limbitless Solutions. UCF is partnering with the group to establish the Center for Applied Biomedical Additive Manufacturing. The partnership will give the group space to further develop its prototypes with support from the universitys researchers and technology transfer experts. Through the Center, Limbitless Solutions plans to collaborate with other universities to extend their expertise to other engineers interested in helping children in their local areas.Michael MacRae is an independent writer.Learn more about the latest technologies in 3D printing at ASMEs AM3D 2016. Meet Lucy. She wants a promotion.

Meet Lucy. She wants a promotion. Meet Lucy. She wants a promotion.Posted November 14, 2013, by Andrea Riddell A friend, lets call herbei Lucy, recently came to me with a conundrum. She had wanted to apply for a new role at her current workplace and had discussed her suitability with her manager, as the role would essentially be a promotion. She welches ready for some different challenges but not sure if she would qualify for a full-blown step up the ladder. Her babo had concluded that she was not, in fact, ready, but was definitely on the way. Lucy then asked for some projects and tasks that she could work on in order to prepare herself for a similar role in the near future. Lucy asked her manager for a promotion Put yourself out there This is key, people Firstly, dont be afraid to ask for a promotion. Putting yourself on the line and essentially talking up your performance can instil the fear of god into some people, particularly women. Youre essentially putting a magnifying glass on your skills and potential and asking someone to analyse your suitability. The problem is, employees tend to see the promotion/pay rise question as something that constitutes a yes or no answer, when in reality its an open and ongoing discussion. Make sure youre ready A pay rise would be nice, but are you ready for the extra responsibilities and workload that comes with it? If youre not excelling at the work youre already doing then it might be hard to convince your manager that youre ready for more. People progredienz at different rates. Levels of ambition also differ. Dont feel like you need to take on more if you actually dont want to. You need to prepare yourself for the discussion with your manager. Put together a record of your performance, including how youve managed to meet your KPIs and all your other achievements. That way youll have solid evidence to show that youre ready. Lucy wasnt sure if she wanted the extra responsibility And what if youre not ready? After asking f or a promotion and being albeit kindly rejected, Lucy then asked her boss how she could work her way up to that position and together they highlighted some projects that she could take on to facilitate this. The conversation doesnt finish when your boss declines your request for a promotion. Just because you dont happen to be ready right now does not mean that you wont get there in the future. Ask for some mentoring on how you can progredienz and gain more experience. This will not only make sure youre on an upward trajectory, but it will also show your boss that youre serious about your career and your future at your workplace. Now back to Lucy A couple of weeks later, I checked in with Lucy. Over some Peking duck she told me how her boss had perhaps absent-mindedly, who knows removed Lucy from some of the projects that were meant to prepare her for a higher position. She was confused that her boss would help her devise a progression plan, only to act as a blockade. I encourage d Lucy to schedule another chat with her manager to find out what her intentions were. Perhaps she had changed her mind and didnt believe Lucy was ready for those projects. Or perhaps, with limited time and resources, she was re-delegating to the people she felt were more suited. Lucy and her manager devise a plan How to stop this happening to you Managers can be busy, and its hard to remember everything when youre busy. Perhaps Lucys manager had just forgotten. Or, even worse, perhaps Lucys manager was passively (and somewhat aggressively) showing Lucy she didnt have confidence in her abilities. Sometimes discussing a plan to take on more work is not as effective as actually putting together a plan to take on more work. Lucy and her manager need to put together a timeframe for Operation vorrcken with several progression checkpoints along the way. This would help keep Lucy on track to career ascendancy. If youre in the same predicament as Lucy, heres what you need to remember Start the discussion before your performance review. You dont have to wait for the annual performance review to ask for a promotion. Approach your boss when youre ready. Your career progression is an ongoing thing. Its not just one conversation. And its not about one single promotion. Its about growing and refining your abilities and skillset. Not many people are happy to rest on their laurels and reach a plateau in their career. If youre looking to keep interested and challenged youll need to view this as an ongoing process. The ball is in your court. Dont rely on your manager to remember that youre trying to groom yourself for a promotion. Keep tabs on your performance and ask for feedback. Youre in charge of your career. Devise a plan. Great. You want a promotion. But how are you going to get one? Make sure you and your manager are clear on how youll be achieving your potential. This way, you will both know when you are finally ready. Payroll Certifications Can Help Your Team

Payroll Certifications Can Help Your TeamPayroll Certifications Can Help Your TeamModern payroll is complicated. From cloud-based systems to tax and regulatory issues, theres a lot that a payroll coordinator or specialist needs to know. To make aya your workers have the proficiency necessary to process payroll efficiently and accurately, there is something company leaders like you can do You can help them attain their payroll certifications. Supporting your payroll staff is a smart move for your organization. Here are four ways payroll certifications can lead to a return on your investment1. Improved work qualityPayroll is a fast-paced, challenging environment with an extremely low tolerance for error. Even a minor misunderstanding of procedures can have enormous repercussions. Workers who have undergone certification training have a demonstrated level of knowledge pertaining to payroll processes, which leads to fewer errors and a boost in productivity. Whats more, staff members prep aring for the exam are actively working to better understand the intricacies of the field. That kind of focus raises performance across the entire gruppe.2. A standardized approachYour payroll team includes people from diverse backgrounds. They may range from junior clerks to senior administrators, including those whove worked in other industries, larger or smaller companies, and multiple states. All of them have their own set of knowledge and best practices - some of which may be outdated or just plain wrong. After everyone goes through the same payroll certification program, they should all be on the same page about how the department works.Looking for professionals who have their payroll certifications? Work with a specialized staffing agency to access temporary payroll specialists. WORK WITH US3. Loyalty and staff retentionTop performers want employers to invest in their professional development. Industry qualifications are major milestones in that development, providing a tang ible reward after a long period of hard work. When you untersttzung employees during the certification process, allowing them to study on company time and paying for coursework and exam fees, they will feel that you value their contributions and professionalism. The results? Loyal, highly trained staff members and employee retention.4. Greater commitment to payrollWith their attention to detail and compliance knowledge, good payroll professionals are frequently poached by other finance teams within the organization. But if your team members work toward and attain their certifications, they are, in essence, declaring their intention to make payroll a lifelong career.Helping your team get certifiedIts certainly possible for payroll workers to attain certifications on their own time and dime. But seeing all the benefits of this credential, its a smart move for employers to support their efforts. You can do this byEncouraging entry-level payroll associates to earn the Fundamental Payrol l Certification (FPC), and experienced payroll professionals to work toward their Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) - more on those below.Reimbursing them for the cost of study materials.Allowing them to study and take the exam on during work hours, cultivating your company culture.Sending them to American Payroll Association (APA) seminars and classes so they can accrue enough recertification credit hours (RCHs) to keep their payroll certifications up to date.In the United States, the gold standards are the two issued by the APA. Some Canadian companies, especially those that also do business in the U.S., also value these credentials.Fundamental Payroll CertificationThe FPC is aimed at entry-level payroll workers with little or no experience in the field. The exam consists of 150 multiple-choice questions, and test takers must answer 80 percent of them correctly to receive this certification. FPC candidates normally study for six to 12 weeks before taking the exam, which is off ered every quarter. The exam covers a broad range of key topics, including core payroll concepts, compliance, calculating paychecks, payroll processes, payroll systems, payroll management, auditing and accounting. After attaining the FPC, employees should have a solid grasp of all the main concepts of the field. The FPC exam fee is $320 for APA members and $395 for non-members.Certified Payroll ProfessionalThe CPP is aimed at more experienced payroll workers. Candidates for this payroll certification are required to meet one of three criteria before sitting for the examCriteria 1 - Must have practiced payroll for at least three of the past five years before the exam date.Criteria 2 - Must have been employed as a payroll worker for at least two full years before the exam date, as well as having completed specific APA coursework within the same time period.Criteria 3 - Must have been employed as a payroll worker for at least 18 months before the exam date, have previously obtained th eir FPC, and have completed specific APA coursework within the same time period. The CPP exam consists of 190 multiple-choice questions. The topic list is the same as for the FPC, but the subjects are covered in much more depth than the fundamental certification. There is the addition of a section on leadership and management. CPP holders are experts in their field and are ready for senior roles within a payroll team. The CPP exam fee is $380 for APA members and $550 for non-members.Professionals have long understood the value of payroll certifications greater job satisfaction, more opportunities and a higher salary. Now its time for company leaders to realize the many benefits of helping their payroll specialists attain and maintain their credentials.Subscribe to the newsletter for articles and resources to help you build and manage a winning team - all sent directly to your inbox.

Tips and Techniques for Finding Freelance Work

Tips and Techniques for Finding Freelance WorkTips and Techniques for Finding Freelance WorkWith more and more work being outsourced to non-traditional workers, opportunities to freelance have increased dramatically over the last decade. Along with the growth in opportunities, has been a corresponding boom in freelance applicants, who realize that freelancing is a great way to earn some money on the side or in some cases, take the place of a 9-to-5 job.If you are in search of freelance opportunities, you know how critical it is to stand out from the pool of applicants. With that in mind, below are a few important considerations to help you successfully land new gigs. 1. Find What Youre Good at It may sound obvious, but its important to think carefully about the strengths you bring to the table. Knowing your limitations and strengths will allow you to best market yourself. Make a list of all your marketable skills. Are you a writer? Do you have experience as a photographer? Write do wn anything you think you could get paid for and then walk away from the list for a day or so. When you come back to it, narrow down the list to those where your passions and strengths align think skill meets will.2. Brush Up That Resume Just as with traditional roles, when it comes to applying for freelance gigs, youre going to need a strong resume to stand out from the crowd. However, freelancing job opportunities differ from traditional jobs in that potential clients will almost always request samples of your work. For those just starting out, considering taking on some free work. For example, if you are applying for a writing position, offer to take on some unpaid guest posts, choose a news article and summarize it, or write a review of a book or movie. Another way to let potential employers know you are taking freelancing seriously is to set up a website to showcase your work and background. When choosing sample work to post or send, be sure to consider the schrift of job f or which youre applying. For example, dont fill up your portfolio with blog posts if youre seeking a web design role.3. Know Your Worth One of the most common mistakes people make when getting into freelancing is undercharging. Pricing your work on the lower end may attract more clients initially, but it can actually backfire. Paradoxically, lower budgets often mean more demanding clients, as $100 typically means more to a small business than $1000 does to a larger one. By definition, raising your prices will also eliminate those potential clients who are most price sensitive. Of course, pricing too high can also be an issue, especially if you are a beginner. Read up on the average pricing for freelance work to get a good idea of how much to charge. 4. Work on that Cover Letter Another mistake new freelancers make is underestimating the cover letter. A strong cover letter should grab the readers attention and let them know what sets you apart. Whenever possible, identify the sp ecific need you can fill to address a clients problem. Avoid using a generic letter clients can sniff one out, so customization is key. And always reread your cover letter to ensure its typo-free. Happy FreelancingHopefully the above tips can make the jump into freelancing an easier one. Like any new endeavor, youll likely face some ups and downs and rejection but dont give up. Stick with it and soon enough youll have clients calling YOU and youll have your choice of which jobs to take on.Author BioMichelle Laurey (michelle_laurey) is a freelance writer who enjoys fitness, relaxing in the fresh air, trying to live a healthy life and daydreaming about visiting new places (and actually visiting them). These workers are more loyal and motivated, and they do better work. This is true to matter what your industry or location. But what makes employees happy? Find out based on a recent survey of more than 12,000 U.S. and Canadian workers. What determines employees’ happiness? 1. PRIDE IN THEIR ORGANIZATION The number-one driver of happiness overall. It occupies the top spot for legal and accounting professionals. 3. A SENSE OF FAIRNESS AND RESPECT The third most important happiness factor. The Perfect Resume Checklist

The Perfect Resume Checklist The Perfect Resume Checklist The Perfect Resume Checklist Courtesy of Taduuda from unsplash.com When you’ve spent days writing a resume, sending it off and hearing nothing is frustrating and discouraging. With hundreds of applications for popular positions, your professional CV could just have been lost in the pile. So you might be asking yourself â€" what can  help me with my resume  and make sure it doesn’t get tossed aside? We’ve prepared a resume checklist to make sure you’re not making obvious mistakes that could be holding you back. Here we go! 1. Check your contact details It IS possible to spell your own name wrong, or forget a number in your phone number â€" making you impossible to call back! Double and triple-check your important contact details 2. Streamline your objective Whether or not to include an objective is debated, but if you have chosen to include one make sure it is relevant to the role and specific (but not TOO specific). It should highlight what you can offer instead of just being about what you want. 3. Target your industry Every professional online resume writer knows that your resume should be personalized for the job or sector at hand. If you are applying for different industries, you should have multiple CVs written to market yourself in each one. 4. Highlight your accomplishments Google’s head of people operations recommends the following format: Accomplished [X] as measured by [Y] by doing [Z] For example: Okay â€" Responsible for negotiating service contracts with XYZ Better â€" Negotiated 30% ($500k) reduction in costs with XYZ to perform post-delivery support Best Negotiated 30% ($500k) reduction in costs with XYZ to perform post-delivery support by designing and using results from an online auction of multiple vendors Go through and see how many of your duties you can improve with this format! Or, use a professional resume editing service  to highlight your best qualities. 5. Improve your language While writing your story and describing your achievements, try to avoid first-person pronouns like “Me” and “I”. Instead, list what was done and achieved with action verbs. 6. Highlight transferable skills Your other jobs and hobbies could have transferable skills that improve your candidacy. Time management, organization, budgeting, and public speaking are all things to consider. You can leave off the fishing and figure skating, though! 7. Format for maximum effect While paying for a flashy and colored resume theme is tempting, HR managers can see them as gimmicky (the exception is marketing and design positions). However, careful use of whitespace, tasteful fonts, headings, and bullet points can draw the eye to the most important information.  Check your information is clearly readable and the essentials stand out. 8. Scan like an employer One of the best tips we’ve heard about how to write resume online is that, on average, potential employers spend only 10 seconds scanning your resume. Get a friend or service to scan your finished work and tell you what stands out and if it’s what’s important. 9. Include a cover letter A well-written cover letter should be standard unless the posing specifically doesn’t ask for one. The combo with your resume will make you stand out much more than other candidates, especially if you use a cover letter writing service. 10. Proofread! Grammar and spelling mistakes anywhere in your CV can result in immediate disqualification. The last thing you do before clicking ‘SEND’ is to proofread â€" twice! Now, send your resume and be sure â€" they will call. Wear the suit, paired with confidence and don’t forget to smile!

The average American has less than half an hour of free time per week

The average American has less than half an hour of free time per week The average American has less than half an hour of free time per week According to a survey conducted on 2,000 individuals by Onepoll on behalf of HR Block, 59% of Americans find it extremely difficult to balance work and their personal schedules. In fact, the average participant claimed to be so busy they only get about 26 minutes of free time a week. This leads to one and five US workers disregarding their non-professional objectives.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! When it comes to balancing the respondents of the survey disclosed that they are currently putting off 14 things on their to-do lists. More grimly, roughly one and four bemoaned being too preoccupied with work to make regular doctor appointments and about half of those that file their own taxes outed their hectic schedule as the reason they won’t this year. The greater majority of the individuals surveyed admitted to ignoring more intimate and less crucial everyday tasks. The mos t popular life administrative tasks that are collectively being put off by Americans are as follows: Cleaning: 47.86% Household maintenance/repairs: 39.55% Laundry: 38.32% Shopping: 32.72% Going to the gym: 31.67% Making appointments (doctor, etc.): 27.03% Cook: 25.98% Car maintenance: 25.63% Going to the bank: 22.92% Paying bills: 18.20% Ladders has reported on the pervasive obsession with overwork that’s plaguing America on several occasions, in addition to the fiscal and productivity benefits of enjoying time off within in reason.Psychology.com reports that of the meager 45% of Americans that actually utilize their paid vacation days, 41% of them spend a good chunk of that time checking into work while they are away.As Joe Robison of Work to Live states: “Humans are energy machines. We expend energy over the course of the workday and work year in our body and brains (which use up 20% of the body’s calories), and then we have to replace it, or fatigue sets in, stress and exhaustion build, and productivity plummets.”This policy of self-care can be enacted in the immediate even if you aren’t currently eligible for a paid extended retreat. Even the simple act of viewing your weekend like a mini vacation has been shown to boosts mood and productivity immensely. One important task that many Americans also feel t hey don’t have enough time for is doing their taxes. Over 50% of respondents answered yes to the following: question “I feel like I don’t have time to do my taxes this year” compared to 33% of people who disagreed.People were then asked about what leisure items or “treats” they intend on buying with any tax refund money. Some of the more interesting responses included: Motorcycle tires PlayStation 4 Trip to casino Niagara Falls trip A party Lawnmower Freedom from credit card companies Pizza Scooter Scuba gear Check out the infographic below for more findings from the survey. You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

Todays teenagers are taking longer to grow up, study finds

Today's teenagers are taking longer to grow up, study finds Today's teenagers are taking longer to grow up, study finds Unlike teenagers of previous decades, today’s teens are living in Peter Pan’s Neverland and are taking longer to grow up. They’re less likely to sneak a drink of alcohol, have sex, ask someone out on a date, explore the world without parents, drive a car, or work an after-school job shift to make money. That’s according to a new study published in Child Development that used government data and time-use studies to analyze survey responses from 8.3 million U.S. teenagers between 1976 and 2016.The study found that today’s teens are avoiding behavior that was widespread just a few decades before. For example, the number of teens who had ever earned money from working dropped from 76% in the 1970s to just 55% in 2010. The number of eighth graders who had ever tried alcohol dropped by more than half since 1993. And while the majority of high school students (54%) were having sex in 1991, only 41% of teenagers in 2015 said they had lost their virginity.“The declines in these ac tivities were relatively recent, primarily appearing since 2000… and were considerable,” researchers found. “The decline in adult activities appeared among boys and girls, Whites and Blacks, lower [socioeconomic status] and higher [socioeconomic status] adolescents, in all four regions of the United States, and in rural, urban, and suburban locations.”Why teens are staying teensThe researchers concluded that because the statistical drops happened across all demographics that race, gender or geographic location is not the primary cause of this extended adolescence. They also  ruled out teenagers being busier and having too much schoolwork as a reason because they found that high schoolers in the 2010s spent less time on homework and extracurriculars than they did in the 1990s. So, what’s causing the failure to launch? The researchers in the study posit a few theories. They believe “greater parental investment and longer life expectancies, encourages long-term development a nd the postponement of reproduction.” When you can live longer, you don’t have to focus all your energy on your everyday survival - you can delay being an independent adult for a few more years. The researchers also subscribe to the “life history theory” that believes that if you’re exposed to a harsh, unpredictable environment during childhood, you’ll be forced to grow up much quicker. When your family is living comfortably, you’re not under as much pressure to strike out on your own and be exposed to the pleasures and pitfalls of new adult opportunities.Under these social contexts, it makes sense that researchers found that adult activities became less common in teens when median household income, estimated life expectancy during the year the teen was born, and the percentage of high school graduates enrolling in college were higher. The researchers recognize, however, that there are limitations with basing broad conclusions on teenagers’s personal survey answers t hat may not apply to all teens. The most radical theory the study suggests could be a reason is teens being too busy online to grow up.“Perhaps teens go out less due to parental restrictions and thus communicate online more,” the study suggests. This theory makes sense when you realize that one of the study’s lead authors, Jean M. Twenge, is also the author of the Atlantic article, “Have Smartphones Destroyed a Generation?” In that article, Twenge argues that smartphone have a negative influence on today’s millennials’ mental health and are a reason why teen depression and suicide have spiked since 2011.  Twenge cites a U.S. government-backed Monitoring the Future survey that found that teens who are glued to their smart screens are more likely to be unhappy.Under these theories, it’s not that teens are lazier and more boring than the rule-breaking teens depicted in 1980s movies like “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.” It’s that they’re too burdened with anxiety and emotional distress to take on new responsibilities, anxieties, and burdens.

Get read How cover letters market your resume

Get read How cover letters market your resume Get read How cover letters market your resume There’s no denying that a powerful, customized cover letter is a key piece of any job search. It’s often how a potential employer decides whether or not to read your resume. So how do they work?Know your audience and find a balance. Think of it like this: the cover letter is the advertisement for your resume. It needs to be short, effective, and memorable. You make an almost immediate decision on whether or not you’re interested in a product or service when viewing its ad. Similarly, a recruiter or employer will make a quick decision about reading your resume while viewing your cover letter.A strong cover letter will have all of the attributes of a great advertisement. It should be as tailored as possible to its intended audience. If it’s too long, it’s an immediate turn off to a busy recruiter. If it’s too short, it may undersell you. A hastily written cover letter or one full of errors will give the impression that you’re not taking your readers’ time seriously. No P ressure.Obviously, there’s a lot riding on your cover letter. It’s your very first impression with hiring managers and recruiters. That’s why so many jobseekers dread writing them. “What,” they say, “if I get it wrong?”Ladders can help you get it right.

The team also finished first in the design category and third in the men’s speed event. During his presentation, Sharma, the author of Kranti Nation: India and the Fourth Industrial Revolution, discussed how mobile technology has transformed the world, observing that the mobile in your hand is fundamentally changing the way we live and work. After identifying the four major industrial revolutions that have taken place since the late 1800s involving steam, electricity, computers, and now, the Internet of Things (IOT) he observed, The divide we saw because of earlier industrial revolutions between a worker and a manager that is going away. (The divide between) an engineer and a non-engineer that is going away. Engineer is not an exclusive term anymore. Everybody can do things because the technology is easier to use. The opening day of E-Fest Asia Pacific also marked the beginning of the events Human Powered Vehicle Challenge (HPVC) with the arrival and registration of the nearly 40 teams participating in the competition, followed by safety inspections and design presentations by each team to the HPVC judges. Over the course of the next two days, the student teams put their vehicles to the test during three exciting events: mens and womens drag races on Saturday, March 17, followed by a two-and-half hour endurance event on Sunday, March 18. The second E-Fest of the season, E-Fest West, took place from March 23-25 at the Fairplex in Pomona, Calif. Students from the state of South Dakota performed impressively in most of the competitions held at the festival, which drew a crowd of nearly 650 people. The team from South Dakota State, the overall winner of the HPVC at E-Fest West in Pomona, Calif., also took top honors in the women’s speed event and for innovation. South Dakota State Universitys HPVC team placed first overall at the E-Fest West Human Powered Vehicle Challenge, as well as in the womens speed event and the innovation category. In addition, the team finishing second in both the mens speed event and the endurance race and third in the design category. The team from California State University, Northridge, the overall runner-up in the competition, took top honors in the endurance race, and second place in both the womens speed event and the innovation category. The University of California, Berkeley, team rounded out the top three teams overall and picked up a second-place award for design as well as a special Craftsmanship Award for their vehicle. In addition to its overall win at the E-Fest West HPVC, South Dakota State fared well in the Old Guard Oral Competition, with students Claire Eggleston and Christian Hogan taking home second and third-place prizes, respectively. A student from another South Dakota university, Josiah Horner of South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, received the first prize at a different Old Guard-sponsored student contest held at E-Fest West, the Old Guard Poster Competition. Three representatives from Disney Consumer Products and Interactive Media (DCPI) - Kathy de Paolo, Mike Goslin and Nikki Katz - discussed their careers during the E-Fest West keynote presentation, “Bringing Disney Magic to Families and Fans Through Technology.” The University of Las Vegas, Nevada took top honors and received a $500 prize at the festivals other major student contest, the Student Design Competition Robot Football challenge. California State University, Northridges team placed second in the competition, receiving $300, while the team from Utah State University won the $150 third prize. The student competitions aside, other highlights of E-Fest West in Pomona included a special student leadership training session titled Design Thinking and an E4C: Engineering for Social Change panel session on March 23; a career development workshop led by Tom Munnerlyn of the Career Center at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, a Future Mini-Talks session titled Making a Successful Transition from College to Career, and an Impromptu CAD Battle and 3D Workshop hosted by Simon Pun of Divergent 3D on March 24; and the session Design for the Next Generation of Engineers sponsored by Siemens featuring John Devitry, a research fellow at Utah State University, on March 25. Colin Brady of San Jose State University (left) presents his work during the Old Guard Poster Competition at E-Fest West. Another major attraction at E-Fest West was the keynote luncheon, Bringing Disney Magic to Families and Fans Through Technology, featuring three representatives from Disney Consumer Products and Interactive Media (DCPI): Nikki Katz, vice president of technology; Kathy de Paolo, vice president of engineering; and Mike Goslin, DCPIs vice president of advanced development. During the two-hour presentation, the three executives discussed their experiences as engineers working at Disney, opportunities for women in the engineering field, and hot trends in engineering including social engineering. The keynote received an enthusiastic response from the students in the audience, including Angel Nunez, a sophomore from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. The Disney keynote was my favorite so far, he said. They did explain their jobs, but they went back a little and explained how they got there. Thats the part most of us want to know; we want to do what youre doing, but how do we start? Nunez, who also attended E-Fest West last year, was similarly impressed with the E-Fest program overall, adding, Keep on doing what you guys are doing. Im looking forward to my third one next year. Doug Stainbrook (right), technical manager for the Solid Edge Academic Team at Siemens PLM Software, shares knowledge with a student at E-Fest West. Siemens was a platinum sponsor of the event. The third in the series of E-Fests to be held this spring, E-Fest East, will take place from April 13 to 15 at Penn State University in State College, Pa. 5 Retail Jobs to Help Build Your Career

5 Retail Jobs to Help Build Your Career 5 Retail Jobs to Help Build Your Career The key to these changes? Amazing employees.  Building connections with customers is still the most important part of the retail business. Salespeople are still the faces of their companies. As customer preferences change, the retailers with the best employees are able to stay competitive. Why does this matter for you as a job seeker? First of all,  more than 15 million jobs are connected directly to  physical retail locations. Furthermore, retail offers an excellent way to enter the career of your dreams. Many people in the fashion and beauty industries, for example, started in retail roles that allowed them to showcase their strengths. From there, they were able to climb the ladder. Retail is a great â€" and often overlooked â€" starting point for many careers. In retail, you can put your skills on display and gain exposure to major brands. When thinking about retail jobs, your thoughts may turn first to cashiers, stylists, and personal shoppers, but there are many other positions out there. Here are some entry-level retail opportunities that could be the perfect way to launch your career: 1. Seasonal Support Seasonal employees typically work from the beginning of the fall season through the winter. Retailers look to these employees to help them handle the increased traffic of back-to-school and holiday shopping. In some stores, seasonal staff are also needed for brand- or industry-specific events, like anniversary sales or collection launches. Identify the bosss managing style before you accept the job

Identify the boss’s managing style before you accept the job Identify the boss’s managing style before you accept the job While you’re likely to find out what kind of leader your boss is after your first few days in the office, it doesn’t help to discover their managing style isn’t compatible with you after you started. If only you could know these things beforehand … oh wait, you can! Here are five indicators to look out for during your interview and offer process before accepting a position. We can’t guarantee you’ll peg your boss perfectly - not everything can be revealed before you show up to the office and see for yourself - but you’ll hopefully discover enough to know if saying yes to that offer is really a good choice.1. Ask about the team dynamic in your interviewYou’ll likely meet with your potential boss in at least one round of the interview process. If so, ask them about the team dynamic and how they would describe company culture. You can even ask how they fit into and shape this dynamic. If for some reason you won’t get the chance to meet your boss in person during the i nterview stages, ask your interviewer the same questions, keeping the focus on your boss. For example, asking, “How does my boss fit into and shape the team dynamic?”2. Pay attention to how the boss communicates via emailIf you’ve had any opportunity to communicate with your boss over email, keep a close eye on not only what they say, but the tone you’re picking up from these emails. For example, if your boss sends an email reading only “Send your portfolio over by the deadline,” you might get the impression that this boss will be straightforward, impersonal, strict or even a hard ass. If your boss sends the same request as “It would be so amazing if you could send your fabulous portfolio. Looking forward to it!!!”, you can infer they are more casual, chatty and outwardly friendly. Also, tune in to the frequency of these emails in your back-and-forth with this potential boss, and how quickly the boss responds to you. Let’s say the boss said they’d get back to you within 24 hours and it’s been multiple days, you could gather that your boss isn’t on top of things. Or you might notice that this person is sending multiple emails in the same thread. If you’re the type of person who prefers everything neatly packaged in one message, your dynamic probably won’t be compatible. Though these are all simply first impressions, using these indicators (and focusing on how you naturally respond to them) could tell you a lot about how you’ll get along with this person.3. Ask your potential boss straight up about his or her managing styleThough asking your potential boss such a direct question might seem awkward, the question isn’t inappropriate. You’re simply asking for a clearer picture of how this person makes decisions, and how you’ll be involved in that process. Pay attention to your potential boss’s response, but also whether you think it’s sincere. Everyone would like to say that they lead their teams by making efforts to collabora te and involve everyone, but that’s not always necessarily what happens. If what you’re hearing seems genuine, that could help you understand this person that much more.4. If possible, seek perspectives of those who have worked with the potential boss beforeDepending on your industry, you could be connected enough that you know someone who knows someone who knows your potential boss. Take advantage of LinkedIn and see if your connections overlap with this person. If they do, reach out to the shared contact. If you know the contact well, ask them frankly about this person, and hopefully, they’ll be honest. If you don’t know the contact well, you could say something like “Hi X, we met at Y and I saw you worked with Z before. How was that experience?” The key is to get any sort of read on how this person feels about your potential boss. Though it’s just one opinion, you gotta take what you can get.5. Google this person and read any interviews and articles focused on him o r herMaybe your potential boss hasn’t been featured anywhere, but maybe they have. It also never hurts to do some organic background research anyway. Whatever you find, see if any other sources can back it up.At the end of the day, you won’t know for sure what you could be getting into until you show up at the office. That said, do as much research as you can before you accept the job. This extra research could make all the difference.

4 things I gave up to be free

4 things I gave up to be free 4 things I gave up to be free True freedom is to live as you are, to do what you want, and to spend time with people you like. For many of us, true freedom is a distant dream. We’re tied down by obligations that we never wanted in the first place. So why do we still end up living a life we don’t want?We live in deception because the truth is too painful. But no one  wants  to live in deception, as the stoic philosopher Epictetus once observed (quote is from  The Daily Stoic  by Ryan Holiday):“Who wishes to live in deception- tripped up, mistaken, undisciplined, complaining, in a rut? No one. These are base people who don’t live as they wish; and so, no base person is free.” Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!  We all know that everything has a price. So what does it take to be truly free? If you want to live on your own terms and do as you please, you must give up the following 4 things.1. LiesThe seeker of truth will be free of deception, lies, and negativity. The seeker of truth will see everything for what it is.Remember this: The truth will make you stronger. Too often, we hide from reality.  We don’t want to face our problems.  But our problems are not problems. It is merely the truth. Why can the truth be a problem? We all have this sense of loneliness inside of us. We feel restricted. Anxious. That’s truth, trying to come out of you. Always be honest with yourself. If something is bothering you, address it. Do not ignore it.That’s how people end up in relationships that eat them up alive. That’s how people can’t look at themselves in the mirror. And that’s how people never take action in their lives and  die with regret.Give up lies. Instead, follow the path of truth. It will set you free.2. ComfortThis is counterintuitive at first because so much of our lives is dedicated to  seeking  comfort and  avoiding  suffering. I’m saying that you should flip it.Why? Because that’s the price of freedom. The idea is simple. When you welcome suffering and no longer hide from it, nothing can take away your peace of mind. No matter what happens to you, you know that you will be able to endure it.Death, grief, sadness, bullying, fear of the unknown, illness, injury, being broke, losing friends, being alone, breaking up, and physical pain. Those are mainly the things we try to avoid. We don’t want to suffer through things that make us feel bad. Why? The reason we’re in pain is that we fear suffering. When you welcome it, you will find that suffering is merely suffering. It will not break you. In fact, it will make you stronger.Next time something bad happens, smile,  say bring it on  and be free. And continuously do hard things in your life. Remind yourself to give up the comfort of your safe life.3. Fear of moneyMoney makes the world go round, is what people say. It’s true. You can’t do much without money. But we fear that we run out of money. That fear is completely unnecessary. To get over your fear of money, you need to do two things: Acquire income-producing skills Save as much as you can You’re free to do any type of work you want. And when you have valuable skills and always improve yourself, you will never be out of work.In contrast, if you have a job, and become too loyal to that job, you forget about yourself. You  always  work for yourself. Never forget that. You are responsible for your own career. And you need to think about yourself first. I prefer to have such an employee to someone who always does what they are told. The former is always trying to grow; the latter accepts the status quo. And then finally, save your money so you can quit any job you have. That’s freedom. You work because it’s you  want  to make yourself useful. Not because you have to.If you want to hear more thoughts on overcoming the fear of money,  check out my video about it.4. Incompatible PeopleNobody can thrive on their own.  You’re better with good people around you.The problem is that most of us surround ourselves with incompatible people. And we keep those people in our lives because we’re afraid to be alone. That’s the opposite of being free. The free person spends time with people who share the same values. There are millions of people on earth. Seek the ones who are like you. And say goodbye to people who are not like you.Does your partner want to complain and be negative? You will be a prisoner of their emotional energy. Don’t be afraid to be alone. It’s way better than being close to people who drain all your energy. Remember, you can’t change people. It’s better to accept that.Instead of fighting with people who are not compatible with you, create a  support  system. The word already says it: Find people you want to support. And who also want to support you.You are the ruler of your kingdomWhen you live by the rules of others, you’re not free. We behave in a certain way because we think that’s what we  should  do. We spend time with people we don’t like. We take jobs we’re not good at. We stay in relationships with people we’r e not compatible with. That’s all because we don’t realize we have power. You are the maker of your own life. Everything that has happened to you is because you made certain decisions. When you’re unhappy, it’s because of your own doing. You have absolute power to live the way you desire. People who don’t agree with that are fearful. They use excuses like, “that’s easier said than done.” Or they’ll cry, “easy for you to say.” And then they spit out one excuse after the other.Look, everyone can be free. You can decide to do whatever you want. Don’t like to hang out with certain people? Ignore them. Don’t like your job? Find another one. Don’t like your city? Move to another one. It’s as simple as that. It doesn’t mean you should always quit everything and be impatient. Remember, always seek the truth and don’t be afraid to do hard things. If you’re unhappy, a different job or city is not the answer. But you already knew that. The lesson is that you are the ruler of your own kingdom. Until you don’t recognize that, you can never be free.So change the way you look at life. Whatever you do, do it because you want to. And live an honorable life.Give up the crap, seek the truth, suffer voluntarily, do hard things, save your money, build real relationships. That’s the price of being free. It’s worth it.This article originally appeared on Darius Foroux.
